Jukka Tilsa

Jukka Tilsa (born in 1961) started his career in the early 1980’s by publishing a comic book called Zärpä, which became somewhat legendary. Linguistically as well as story wise, the twisted Zärpä stories have inspired Finnish comic absurdists of several generations such as Jii Roikonen and Jyrki Nissinen. After the Zärpä venture, Tilsa retired to farming for a decade. He made a comeback as a comic artist in the beginning of the 1990’s because – as he himself puts it – he needed money for a band saw. Tilsa has published a total of eleven books in Finland. He is at his best when creating short, naive, and linguistically experimental stories.
