Characterized by peculiar intertextuality, the comics of Turunen (born in 1973) are depictions of the aggression underlying seemingly civilized people. In his five graphic novels and the Ufoja Lahdessa (“UFOs in Lahti”) comic book, he creates a world that is scary and strangely alluring at the same time. Turunen typically combines elements of the everyday and his own life with alienating, surreal elements. Strong imagery, strange references to popular culture and almost nightmarishly bright colors create a wonderful contrast for the often laconic texts. Turunen’s comics have been translated into several different languages.
